I’ve read and heard about the news on the two American journalists who were sentenced to hard labor for 12 years by the Central Court, the highest Court in North Korea for “committing hostilities against the Korean nation and illegal entry”. It’s really a sad story for the families and friends of the San Francisco-based Current TV journalists to be penalized that way.
In a statement, “The families of Laura Ling and Euna Lee are shocked and devastated by the outcome their trial.” They plead for the quick release of the two Americans, “We ask the Government of North Korea to show compassion and grant Laura and Euna clemency and allow them to return home to their families.” Reports say that the 4-year old daughter of Lee was reportedly experiencing “anguish over the absence of her mother”.
The two were arrested in March 17 by the North Korean border guards while filming near the Chinese border. Anti-North Korean protest have been staged in Seoul, South Korea while diplomats are reportedly using all possible channels for the quick release of the two journalists despite US’ lack of diplomatic relations with North Korea. Earlier, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton called for the release of the two journalists based on humanitarian grounds.
I hope that they do not endure Pyongyang’s horrific (as described by escapees) prison system and that two journalists could safely return and be reunited with their families soon.
